Crystal Eastman and Fil
DeAngelis, who doubles as both her producer and bassist,
started the project in March 2004, when Eastman approached DeAngelis about
recording a solo album (at the time she was playing with her family band
Las Lutas, an acoustic
alt-folk band). Since they embarked on exploring Crystal's musical imagination,
there have been a
lot of interesting and often humorous twists in the story of Crystal and
the Wolves.
For example, although he
plays bass with Eastman now, DeAngelis started out as the drummer.
She says she convinced DeAngelis to play drums last winter because,
"my tunes were begging for drumming." As soon as DeAngelis started
drumming,
Dave Gursom joined them on bass. They played a few shows and officially
became a trio in May 2005.
Funny thing is though, Dave Gursom
is also a great singer songwriter with a growing career in the Bay Area.
While CRYWOLF has recently found a drummer to play with (Bryan Scholl) and
Fil has taken back the bass
to play with the Wolves, Gursom sometimes still jumps on backing vocals
with them from time to time.
What began as a simple solo recording project has become "a rock n'
roll dream,"
They start touring this September.
Crystal and the Wolves is now going public with a cache of catchy songs,
a fun live show,
and a samplerEP that hints at the groundbreaking genre-hopping debut album
they are working on in the studio.
Warning: they are gooooooood.
In other related band history, Eastman and DeAngelis have started a music
services group which Crystal operates
when she's not playing music. DeAngelis is the "golden ears" of
the production wing of Ears With
Gears.
The studio is based out of Treasure Island.
More band history on the way from the future...
Crystal and the Wolves
deliver powerful intelligent poetry in pop rock format with a genre-blending
twist.
For example, on the song Lucky Girl, the blues rock verse and ska chorus
jump out at you as she sings confidently about how nothing is ours - not
fame, not good looks, not even our families. And on the swinging number
Lullaby for Shai, Crystal soulfully purrs out words of finding merriness
within yourself in a world where joy is not guaranteed. On song "Peace,
Even." the sweet voice intelligently observes times are good and bad. The
lyrics bring fresh poetry to age old age ideas. Crystal Eastman started
writing songs while working in Washington DC. When her house burnt down
at the same time she lost her job, she decided to just play music. While
travelling European and American streets alone, Crystal dreamed up a concept
album that describes a slightly mystical and often upbeat place called Shapinska
Rock. Crystal came back to the US determined to bring Shapinska Rock to
full musical fruition. She met producer/multi-instrumentalist Fil DeAngelis
a few months after her return and they began production. As recording progressed
on the album, a live band grew out of the studio sessions. Since May 2005,
Crystal and the Wolves have been playing out with a cache of catchy songs
and an infectiously fun live show. Since July they have independently distributed
over 2000 copies of "Shapinska Rock Sampler-EP", a 6-song recording that
hints at the rocking debut album they are working on in the studio.
